WHAT I’VE LEARNED 👇 💗 trims every 4 months - do as I say, NOT as I do 🫣 I used to trim my hair almost daily (myself!!!) at the beginning of my curl journey! It ended up being sooo short but so cute (buttttt uneven. There is a way to trim DIY without making it uneven! I just hadn’t learnt that yet. So every time I saw a stringy piece or an uneven piece, I would chop regardless of where I was at in my wash day cycle. But good things require patience)! Now, I’m TRYING to get my hair trimmed every 4 months - yes, even though I’m trying to grow it out - and now that I’m not DIYing my curl cuts, it’s VERY hard to stay consistent. In an ideal world, I would be trimming every 4 months to keep my ends healthy and help my hair grow longer in the long run (so I don’t have to cut off so much and get an ACTUAL haircut) 💗 figuring out the ROOT cause of the damage - in my case, it was heat damage from daily straightening and sun damage from doing sports outdoors (crazy that the sun can damage your hair so much. Since my hair is fine and blonde, it lacks the structure and melanin to protect it. You can tell my hair is healthier now and I don’t spend as much time in the sun, because it’s darker now. The sun works the opposite way in hair vs skin, because your hair doesn’t make melanin in response to sun - the sun breaks down the hair’s natural melanin! I’m also much paler now too 🤣). So my solution was STOPPING heat-styling (my transition period included blow-drying after showers, braiding, buns etc. until I was ready for my curl journey), and spending less time in the sun. You can also use heat protectants and UV protectants, but they don’t protect against 100% of damage, so be warned. 💗 bond builders, protein treatments, hair masks, leave-ins & oils - these are all so important in protecting your hair! Let me break it down for you: - Bond builders, protein treatments, & hair masks: bond builders (and molecular hair repair products) temporarily repair damage that’s already been done, by fixing the hair’s natural chemical bonds that have been broken. Protein treatments restore the hair’s protein (hair loses protein when it gets damaged) - protein loss happens a lot, so this is temporary too. Hair masks temporarily restore the hair’s moisture. All 3 of these are needed when your hair gets damaged for optimal repair. There are different types of bond builders and molecular repair treatments for different types of bonds, so one treatment may not fix all types of bonds - but it’s better to start with one than use none at all! - Leave-in conditioners and oils: leave-in conditioners are good at conditioning your hair, which helps reduce frizz and protect your hair from the environment. They also help restore your hair’s pH balance, which is essential. Btw, hair masks and acidic bonding treatments also restore your hair’s pH balance, but it’s recommended to also use a leave-in conditioner. Hair oils help give your hair added protection from the environment. I like using lightweight oils like squalane (with an A) Above all, patience is so important in your hair journey! Especially if you don’t want to chop all your hair off. My hair journey was easier because I spent about a year being “lazy” with my hair instead of straightening it, and just blow dried and braided it, which was wayyy less damaging. So I had about a year’s worth of healthy hair already grown in, and that helped me realize I had curls. Then I slowly chopped more and more of my hair off until it was a cute little bob, and that worked for me for a while! But if you’re not ready for that, you’ve gotta be ready for the fact that your hair will not transform overnight if it’s damaged. Braids and low-heat blowouts can help so much during that time ❤️ Feel free to follow if this helped you! And if you need product recs, leave a comment or check out my Amazon storefront! I have tons of amazing products on there 🫶 #camrynscurls #curly #curlyhairjourney #damagedcurls #curlyhairtips
