Peak romanticism! Adolph von Henselt’s Piano Concerto in F minor, Op. 16 (1844), could be described as such, especially in this Larghetto movement providing a gorgeous cantabile melody, that may tie this work to another cantabile masterpiece, the Largetto of Chopin’s Concerto No. 2, also in F minor (1829). Sadly, Henselt’s concerto, deemed too difficult to play, even by the composer himself, was forgotten. Only 4 recordings of it exist (Lewenthal 1969, Michael Ponti 1969, Hamelin 1994, Paul Wee 2024). This is a great performance given in 2023 by Evren Ozel and the TON orchestra. Henselt (1814-1889) was known for having a supreme cantabile playing: Liszt said he had « velvet paws ». And he was a great virtuoso, and it shows in his compositions, certainly in the 1st and 3rd movements of this concerto. The posterity of this piece is twofold: high popularity from the premiere given by Clara Schumann in 1844, and relative obscurity from the 1920s till now. Whose fault is that? Well, the composer himself said it was too difficult to play it in public. But let me mention the legendary names that played it: Clara Schumann, Liszt (who sight-read it all from the manuscript) and his pupils Von Bülow, Friedheim, Von Sauer, Gottschalk, De Pachmann, Busini and Egon Petri, who declared that it was the hardest piece he had ever played… Last but not least, Rachmaninoff certainly played it in his young years as he was heavily influenced by Henselt. Indeed, Rachmaninoff’s teacher, Zverev, was a pupil of Henselt: as a result, he had to work on a lot of Henselt’s works (one recording remains), especially this concerto… How so? The first 2 bars of Henselt’s concerto contain the same motif that constitutes the famous Prelude Op. 3 No. 2 in C-sharp minor: moreover, Henselt was the first composer to write on 4 staves, and Rachmaninoff followed suit in his prelude. #henselt #romantic #Chopin #rachmaninoff #rachmaninov #practice #fyp #foryoupage #pianotok #explore #piano #pianotime #pianist #pianista #pianolover #classicalmusic #classical #pianomusic #musician #musicaclassica #pianolove #Chopin #pianogram #musiclover #music #musica #pianocover #пианино #ピアノ #피아노 #钢琴
