@cleoabram: Would Dune ornithopters work in real life? To answer that question, here’s how a helicopter works and how these ornithopters would compare… But my favorite part of the story is this: Helicopters themselves were inspired in part by science fiction. The father of modern helicopters, Igor Sikorsky, said he was inspired by a fictional version of a helicopter in a Jules Verne book he read as a kid. He often used to quote Verne: "Anything that one man can imagine, another man can make real." I love that. well dune is 250,000 years in the future so I'm sure the engineering kinks could be figured out

Btw: the ornithopters in dune were inspired by an actual ornithopter a French guy tried and nearly succeeded in making in the 30s

With 20,000 years of mechanical, aeronautical, and material engineering we can probably figure it out.

Just so you know helicopters don't have to have aerofoils in their blades, it's angle of attack of the blades that provide lift.

Quick correction: When it zooms in, the air moving across the wing moves the way we show (bigger side in front). But when the wings rotate, they should rotate the other way (big side stays in front)!

NO! It’s the angle of the blades that allows it to fly. Not the shape

Leonardo di Vinci invented the helicopter. Granted the wing was a cone shape and won’t up and down but he had the right idea

what if the wings just flapped faster, could they be made smaller then?

Also add in mechanical engineering in that you need to reverse direction of those wings every flap. That’s a lot of stress.
