Heel Fracture Facts - Calcaneal fractures account for 50-60% of all fractured tarsal bones. - < 10% present as open #fractures - there is a male predominance of injuries (recent studies suggest regional variation in male/female predominance) - Most #calcaneusfracture patients are young (20-39 yrs) - Comorbidities (diabetes, osteoporosis) can increase risk - Calcaneal fractures are rare in children . Surgical #HeelFracture Tx: When recommended, the goal is to restore calcaneal morphology + restore articular congruency. Surgical treatment may be delayed until "wrinkle sign," returns (usually 5-10 dys after injury). Soft tissue swelling may take up to 21 dys to resolve.
