The point of probing questions is intended to verify where the dealer can make their money. The reality is the cash or trade equity does go into the dealers pocket one way or another.

I feel like she has no idea what she’s talking about and is just very confused. Maybe she overheard a conversation about a non refundable deposit on a dead deal where the sales person did get paid

he probably made a comment similar to "commission on a sale is usually about the same as the down payment most people make" and she or the boyfriend heard "your down payment is my commission"

went into a dealership with my own financing. refuse the extended warranty. did all the paperwork on an iPad. at the end of it the guy said wait hold on, the iPads not not working.

There are pay plans where the amount of the down payment is what determines the commission, but that down payment is still put towards the loan the way it should. Maybe that’s what it is?
