They are not a “warranty” but a vehicle service contract. They are an optional agreement that pay for some repairs when a vehicles manufacturer’s warranty expires.

I got lucky with my extended warranty. 2017 honda crv needed new injectors and forums were full of people saying Honda ext warranty didn’t cover. Mine did 😮💨
