Someone said it was weird John’s friends and not his wife threw his intervention and I couldn’t stop thinking about it

Yep. Jennette McCurdy's memoir was so good partly because she had years since these events happened. She had time to reflect. She had therapy.

a lot of us went from "how could John leave her?" to "ahhh ok I see that's why"

People putting out memoirs without having gone through the inner work to really reflect on the events their recounting

She is so talented in her own right, this book could’ve been about her.

It was bizarre to see people who laud and relate to Fleabag rip this book apart, for the same themes of anxiety self obsession and social performance. But this puts it into perspective a bit more

I think it’s a very American/western concept that a narrative must show growth. Sometimes it’s more interesting to tell a story honestly & not force a moral/lesson

I read it as a book about BPD, so her list of diagnoses at the end of the book made SENSE to me. Retrospectively it’s been hard to think about.

I remember reading an interview in early 2020 where John Mulaney mentioned he was hiding that he was eating candy from his wife and that always struck me as really strange

i feel the smallest bit bad for her because it's clear they rushed publishing to capitalize on the divorce (despite him never being mentioned!!) & it could have been better given time/self reflection

I saw somewhere else that she pitched a coffee table book of her art with a few essays but they wanted a memoir instead and that makes sense to me for the result we got

My favorite thing about this book is that it’s breaking the parasocial relationship people decided they had with her when she got divorced.

one of the only memoirs i’ve read that was messy but was also compelling and well executed was Down the Drain by Julia Fox

I found it relatable and imperfect. I’ve seen everyone ripping it apart. I find it hard to rate a memoir. Yes it was triggering but it was her story.

The weights thing is all I need to know to skip it. What a cruel woman based on that alone.

If you’ve been diagnosed with anxiety later in life with a tough parental relationship, this book makes a lot of sense.

I think what was revealing about this is that so many people picked the “wrong side” to support in the JM/AMT divorce, and now they’re learning there was no right side 😮

To me, her therapist break up seemed to be the most important relationship she ended. Ending was very self indulgent
