The Valyrians were protected among the great volcanic mountains known as the Fourteen Flames. The Valyrians learned to tame dragons and turned them into the most fearsome weapon of war the world had ever seen. There are legends about the origins of dragons and how they came to be controlled by the Valyrians. Valyrians: The Valyrians claimed that dragons were born as children of the Fourteen Flames. Qarth: The tales of Qarth say that once there was a second moon in the sky. One day, the sun burned the moon and cracked it like an egg, and from it burst a million dragons. Asshai: The accounts from Asshai are many and confusing, but certain texts (all incredibly ancient) claim that dragons first came from the Shadow, a place where knowledge failed. These stories from Asshai say that a people so ancient they had no name were the first to tame dragons in the Shadow and brought them to Valyria, teaching the Valyrians their arts before vanishing from the annals. It seems more likely that the Valyrian tale is the truest. But there were once dragons in Westeros, long before the Targaryens arrived, according to legends and stories. In fact, there is evidence of this, as dragon bones have been found in the North, and even in the jungles of Sothoryos. But the Valyrians mastered and subdued them like no one else could. The Valyrians had no kings; they called themselves the Freehold because every landowning citizen had a voice. Archons could be elected to help govern, but they were chosen by the feudal lords from among their ranks and only for a limited time. It was rare for Valyria to be ruled by a single noble family, though not entirely unknown. Valyria’s power was too great. With their arcane arts, the Valyrians built the Citadel on Dragonstone. With the destruction of the Rhoynar, Valyria achieved complete dominion over the western half of Essos, from the Narrow Sea to Slaver’s Bay, and from the Summer Sea to the Shivering Sea. Slaves arrived in masses to the Freehold and were quickly sent beneath the Fourteen Flames to extract the precious gold and silver so loved by the landowners. The properties of Valyrian steel are well known, resulting both from folding the iron many times to balance and remove impurities, and from the use of spells (unknown arts) to give the resulting steel supernatural strength. The Valyrian steel swords still left in the world can be counted by the thousands, but in the Seven Kingdoms there are only 227 such weapons according to the inventories of Archmaester Thurgood, some of which have been lost or have vanished from the annals of history. The great beauty of the Valyrians was well known, with their silver or pale gold hair and eyes of purple shades not found in any other people in the world. This is often presented as proof that the Valyrians are not entirely of the same blood as other men. Unexpectedly for all (except for Aenar Targaryen and his maiden daughter, Daenys the Dreamer), the Doom came to Valyria. No one knows what caused the Doom. Most say it was a natural cataclysm: a catastrophic explosion caused by the simultaneous eruption of the Fourteen Flames. Some septons (not so wise): claim that the Valyrians caused the disaster through their promiscuous belief in a hundred gods or more, and in their impiety they delved too deep and unleashed the fires of the Seven Hells upon the Freehold. Some maesters (influenced by fragments of Septon Barth’s work): believe that Valyria had used spells to tame the Fourteen Flames for thousands of years, that the unceasing hunger for slaves and wealth was meant to expand their power, and that when those spells finally failed, the cataclysm became inevitable. The only certain thing is that it was a cataclysm like the world had never seen. The ancient and powerful Valyrian Freehold, home of dragons and sorcerers of unmatched skill, was shattered in a matter of hours. #targaryen #miparati #oldvalyria #fyp #valyria #viral #grrm
