Today was such a big day for Luca! Having his port placed means we are one step closer to being done and him coming home!! There’s always nerves and anticipation, no matter how many times we have done this, it somehow doesn’t get easier butttt this has been his best and easiest surgery yet. If you have been following along for a while surgery days were pretty traumatic at the hospital he was last at. Something always went wrong, it was always chaotic and overwhelming. Luca would leave with additional issues and it was so much for my mama heart. I kinda started to think maybe this is just how surgery is, I tried to make sense of it and justify it but also it was a major factor in us deciding to switch hospitals for Luca. I couldn’t hand him over to their team of surgeons and trust that when he went back he was in good hands. This was agonizing for me and anytime I pictured having to do it again because I knew we would need to, I would feel sick. Today, couldn’t have been more the opposite. It was calm, everything was controlled and calculated, they listened to us and what would be best for Luca. They treated him with kindness and were gentle. Everything went perfect, no surprises, no “well, you know Luca has his own way of doing things”. It was all standard, went exactly as planned, Luca woke up and didn’t scream, he didn’t require a bunch of medications and drugs to calm him down. It as peaceful. I’m not one to live in the past or really revisit it but I think it important to share when things go so well and you have a hospital and team so in line with your level excellence. I’m just so incredibly grateful for our reality in the new hospital the last few months. I’ll dive more in, in a future post but to just touch on it, it’s been so night and day and I whole heartedly believe Luca is thriving like he is because of them. I believe they saved his life. So today went amazing, Luca is so brave and handled everything so beautifully, I’m so so proud of him. We are so incredibly close my friends 🥹. Round 6 day 14. #downsyndrome #adoption #leukemia #foryoupage #fyp God is good.
