More than half a century of rule by the Assad family came to a sudden end on Sunday, after the Syrian rebel group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, led by Jolani, took control of Damascus. Thousands of Syrians sing, dance and wave flags in Umayyad Square in Damascus after the country’s new rulers called on people to celebrate the fall of the Assad regime. Syrian Druze also celebrated, waving the revolution flag in Sweida, Syria’s mainly Druze southern province, where weekly anti-government demonstrations had been ongoing for about 18 months.
