@thebriefingpod: Melbourne Storm have announced plans to reduce the number of Welcome to Country ceremonies at their games, which they say will allow them to focus on “action” to improve the lives of First Nations people. It has many scratching their heads as they consider where they sit on the topic and what the importance of the ceremony in Australia is. On Tuesday morning’s episode of The Briefing, Bension Siebert is joined by Yorta Yorta man and Chair of the First Nations Foundation, Ian Hamm, to discuss what the ramifications of this decision may be and the significance of the ceremony. 🎧 The Briefing: Melbourne Storm has reignited the Welcome to Country debate #FirstNations #WelcomeToCountry #IndigenousAustralian #TheBriefing #Podcast #MelbourneStorm
So I have to be welcomed to my country 100 times a year. We are over it.

the correct answer is both are completely unnecessary and pure virtue signalling from corporate entities looking to appear like they care. but all it does is annoy most people in the crowd who are sick of being 'welcomed' to land they use all the time.

my opinion only. I think It should be conducted Main Events like state or international sports. I do not think it should be done at weekly events. the same with the anthem done at major events only

It's being abused and overused. It's done way too often and by people who just use it for their own agenda.

While Welcome to Country might be appropriate for visitors from other countries, I don't believe it is necessary or appropriate
otherwise.

You can’t talk about this in the isolation of the AFL. Many people’s workplaces also do this at meetings, sometimes multiple times a day. Peoples diminishing tolerance of this is across the board

You should do a welcome to country when someone new comes to the country. Then we could all adopt it. But otherwise stop giving one to me, I've had one. One is enough.

Didn’t Ernie Dingo started this in the 70s or 80s. I went to school in the 60s and early 70s and we never had it

look at CCYP website on Standard #1 for concerns of compliance by Storm. Response language by Storm of 'we need to recognise everyone etc' is known divisive language & shows lack of understanding need
