In the heart of Culross, perhaps better known to Outlander fans as the village of Cranesmuir, something special has been quietly unveiled. A dress. But not just any dress. This is the original costume worn by Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan, the enigmatic, fiery, time-traveling witch whose obsession with the Jacobite cause drove her through the centuries in search of a different fate for Scotland. I stumbled upon it during a visit today and wanted to share it with you all. Crafted by legendary costume designer Terry Dresbach, this ensemble isn’t just historically accurate, it’s narrative in thread form. The design subtly nods to Geillis’ roots in the 1960s, long before her first appearance in the 18th century. A brilliant detail , dissonant, slightly out of place , just like her character. It’s part of a wider exhibition celebrating the massive impact film and television has had on Scottish tourism. And rightly so. Over the past decade, this small village of Culross and many other sites looked after by the National Trust for Scotland have become pilgrimage spots for fans from across the world. And Geillis herself? She wasn’t just a fictional creation. In real history, Geillis Duncan was a young woman accused of witchcraft in 1590. Her coerced confession sparked the infamous North Berwick witch trials, a chilling episode in Scotland’s past. The lines between fact and fiction blur here, as they often do in the Scotland. Now, as Outlander approaches its final season, this exhibit brings something tangible to the experience, a piece of the show you can see, stand before, and feel the weight of. #outlander #Scotland #culross #geillisduncan #witchtrials #andythehighlander
