The idea that HFCS is uniquely harmful is not supported by evidence. It became an easy target because U.S. agricultural policies heavily subsidize corn, making HFCS cheaper to produce and widely used in low-nutrient, ultra-processed foods. But metabolically, it behaves just like cane sugar. And policies or public health messaging that pretend otherwise mislead people. Because the real issue is excessive added sugar intake, not which highly refined version of it you use. And the goal should be to consume less added sugar overall, not swapping one refined sugar for another in a sugar sweetened beverage, which will do nothing to improve health outcomes.  Note: The 2022 meta-analysis found no significant differences between HFCS and sucrose in weight, BMI, waist circumference, fasting glucose, insulin, triglycerides, or cholesterol. The only slight difference observed was a small increase in C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation) with HFCS, but that was explained as marginal and not clinically meaningful.
