How to handle your direct report accusing you of bullying👇 First and foremost it’s important to acknowledge that the way we intend to communicate something isn’t always the way the other person receives it or hears it.  Even if we didn’t mean for something to come across as harsh, it doesn’t mean the other person didn’t receive it that way. People will interpret things based on their own experiences and beliefs.  This is why if someone accuses you of bullying, it’s important to explore this with curiosity so you can understand more about their experience and discuss what changes need to be made to improve the relationship and also ensure the work gets done. Neither of these scenarios will resolve the situation though which is why it’s important to lean in and seek to understand.  This is a good phrase that can be useful in many tense situations: “Can you tell me more about that as I’m curious where that’s coming from.” This helps to: ✅ De-escalate the tension ✅ Explore the real issue ✅ Keep the relationship intact If you think someone is accusing you of bullying as a tactic to dodge responsibility, then I would still recommend responding with curiosity and having real open transparent conversations.
