When the beetle feels threatened, it opens a valve to allow the chemicals to mix in a third chamber, where they react in a highly exothermic (heat-producing) reaction.The pressurized mixture is rapidly forced through a nozzle at the back of the beetle, producing a popping sound and a forceful spray that can reach temperatures of up to 100°C (212°F).The beetle can aim this spray with remarkable accuracy, which helps it deter predators.
