Please do this before it's too late👇 I’m Dev. I came to Singapore 15 years ago, and as immigrants, we had no relatives or family support. My parents were obsessed with the wrong things: the job, the savings, the PR application. But every single time I was on the verge of losing everything, it was my network of friends that saved me. Here are 3 crises I faced where my support system was priceless. 𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘁 When I first landed, I couldn’t speak or understand English. I was completely lost and couldn't even function. I just tagged along with my childhood best friend, who became my translator, my guide, and my teacher. He patiently explained how to exist in this new world. 𝟮. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 I was stuck in the worst-performing class in Primary 1, unable to speak a single word of English. My family didn't know how to fix it. It was my friends' parents who found and recommended the one tuition teacher who could help. Because of their network, I went from the bottom of the school to the top class by Primary 4. 𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 This was the big one. Just months before my O’level exams, my dad lost his job. My dependent pass was cancelled. I was about to be forced to go back to India. It was a terrifying time. My friends saved me. They literally came to ICA and signed off as my sponsors so I could stay and write that exam. Because they did that, all my efforts didnt go to waste... I got top grades and went to the No. 1 junior college in Singapore, Raffles Institution. That single act of support changed the entire trajectory of my life. So here’s my final message to you: Your job is important. Your savings are important. Getting a PR is important. But as an immigrant, none of them should be your first priority. Build a wide, strong support system. In a new country, it is the only asset you will ever have that can truly save you.
