it's also the fact that our voting is accessible. it's always on a weekend with a lot of polling locations, with options to vote early or do a mail in ballot. yes it's mandatory, but I think Americans assume it's just as hard for us to vote as it is for them

You also have to appeal to the middle. Too extreme and you’ll get votes, but normally not enough.

One important thing about mandatory voting is that it puts the onus on the AEC to ensure everyone is capable of voting - voter suppression is much much harder.

you don't have to vote you can leave it blank you need to turn up & be ticked off to prove you weren't denied right to vote like in other countries

Voting is not mandatory in Australia. Turning up and having your name crossed off the roll is mandatory. Even then it’s a $20 fine.

if you are a citizen then you must vote, must pay tax, must defend the country when called upon, and must serve on a jury and called up. Those are the 4 civic duties.

I've generally never really encountered anyone complain about the manditory voting system, UNTIL this last federal election. It feels like a specific catagory of anti-politics losers really latched onto it as a talking point. And they weren't going at it from the "I couldn't be bothered to go vote" standpoint, but they were actually claiming it was anti-democratic.

As a former campaign organiser for a political party in the UK, can confirm. About 70-90% of actual campaign work is telling people there's an election on and to go vote (selectively to the people you want ofc)

Preferential voting is not even remotely complicated. Apathy is the problem. It would take 10 to 15 minutes to research and understand. First you have to care and be honest.
