I wish it was explained to me that my diagnoses were mainly for insurance purposes, not identities

You’ve summoned the social workers! But seriously, we talk about the person-in-environment as the crux. How can people heal when they lack access to basic nutrition, hygiene, housing, restful sleep, and yes, even access to nature and movement? We can’t fully treat symptoms until we address the underlying causes, and the systems and structures that uphold them. I will die on this hill.

I work with parents whose kids are in foster care… of course they’re depressed or continuing to struggle, let’s take the entire story into account. Not to mention homelessness, poverty, etc.

Literally. Especially after working in community mental health. Like no shit they’re depressed, they have food insecurity, are couch surfing, are underpaid, haven’t been to the dr in years bc they can’t get there or can’t get childcare

this is why I choose the social work pathway, offers a whole person approach- not just looking at symptomatology and diagnosing but also looking at individual circumstances (food/housing, health, transportation, accessibility, etc)

As someone who teaches a masters of diagnosis class, the difference is that diagnosis doesn’t necessarily consider etiology. Nor does it prescribe treatment. It’s a symptomatic, jumping off point, and that is all it can do. The hard work does after the diagnosis. When the “why?” has to be understood.

Do you think to be a therapist you should also be skilled as a Dr

well you are supposed to make sure the symptoms aren't better explained by another reason, including medical reasons. don't you use the dsm?

LOVE this! Not enough mental health professionals talk about this! Shoot even a lot of regular medical professionals don’t ask about it!

Coach Clay | AuDHD :
This is why I decided to go the route of getting certified as a coach rather than get a degree in psych. That’s not me bashing the degree (still a possible goal of mine), but I wanted to be able to help ppl with a more holistic approach.

But the pharmaceutical industry collapses if we embrace holistic therapy.

This is why we need a care TEAM. I wish our system did better at grouping us together instead of asking the patient to and hoping we all communicate

Sure there’s a connection- but I think you need to be careful about this bc plus sized people don’t need their therapist approaching from a place of judgment, or refusing them treatment. Many diagnoses exist independent of these things, even if overall wellness is impacted.

I encourage so many clients to see a dietician because of this, and also there have been several studies showing exercise can be a more effective intervention for depression than SSRIs

It goes the other way, too. Seeing the physical problems but not bringing mental health into the picture. 😞

This is a great point. Nutrition and physical activity can certainly play a huge role in someone’s mental health.

Licensed for 10 years. My first session we always discuss restful sleep, proper hydration, healthy brain healthy food, and physical activity (non exercise movement to start). The body will always focus on physical issues before allowing that energy to be used for mental health coping. Have to have the fundamentals well taken care of before we can even begin to think about learning cognitive coping or processing

The mind-body connection is not taken seriously in western medicine despite strong evidence otherwise. Check out books like When the Body Says No, The Myth of Normal, and the Body Keeps the Score (all my medicine doctors too)
