@andreacheong_: I went to a recycling facility outside of Paris with @Vestiaire Collective to see how they process textiles that people don’t want anymore and omg there’s a lot to unpack here 😅 #shein #sustainablefashion #recycledfashion #fashioneducation
I work in a charity shop & fast fashion/overconsumption is an epidemic. We struggle to sell SHEIN/boohoo/Primark/PLT/Temu because even though people are happy to buy is brand new, there is a huge stigma around buying it second hand… because people know it’s awful… Also the amount of brand new with tags SHEIN, Temu etc. we get in is insane! People buy loads because it’s cheap, don’t wear half of it & we have to pick up the pieces caused by overconsumption & capitalism, costing my charity a lot of money in desposal fees. I could make a whole series on what it’s like on our side of things.

I 1000% agree with this and I also disagree with a lot of the comments. As somebody who sews, and make her own garments, you all have absolutely no idea how ridiculously expensive its become to make clothing. And those who want more thrifting? Because it’s trendy now to thrift items, accessibility to more affordable clothing through thrifting is nearly gone. We’re putting the blame disproportionately on the wrong people . If it doesn’t exist, people can’t buy it. It’s that simple. We’re accountable not to overconsume, but companies absolutley should be held accountable for what they produce. Could you imagine if Shein had to intake these recycled bundles of waste that we’re seeing and they had to figure out how to reuse them? I’m pretty sure the narrative would be quite different.

I got a pair of pants from Uniqlo where the seams immediately split after the first use. luckily I have a sewing machine so I could secure it better but like the pants were basically held together by nothing. jokes on me for buying it in the first place

Two years ago, I decided to buy only quality clothes made from cotton, wool, and linen. Since then, I have to say it’s been quite difficult to find decent pieces in the mass market—but every season, I’ve managed to do it. Yes, the price is always higher than for polyester clothes, but when you see those recycling facilities, it all just makes so much sense 😓

Check out an app called Good on You that rates clothes brands sustainability. Increasingly transparency of consumer information about brand quality and sustainability is vital. I wish influencers had some ethics about the brands they work with- but that won’t happen as most just want to cash in (present company excluded)

Companies should be required to prove a product meets real human need before mass production, no more wasteful, resource-draining junk made for profit alone. Justify its purpose, impact, and lifespan,or don’t make it.

On Xiaohongshu many girls have been exposing how men’s clothes are always better made, despite always being cheaper. We shouldn’t accept bad quality clothes. I still buy fast fashion (rarely) but I am buying less in general. New clothing isn’t human right it’s a luxury to buy new clothes. We should ask for better quality regardless of the brand. Then the next step of course is consider sustainability and fair pay etc

I'm poor af, being in second hand often ia more expensive than on shein, but I do know buying ANYTHING in large amount is just not good. I take my sweet time selecting items, searching for revievs and what theyre made of and if they seem sturdy. then I can wear them for a long time, and hopefully resell or donate

once you and others in the west are done picking through these, they get sent to lower income coutries as donations but most are unusable and they get stuck w trash. i know cuz i grew up wearing the clothes from these packs and passed by the fires lit to destroy the left over trash every day

While I agree 💯 with everything you're saying...what's your advice for people who simply cannot afford 'made in the UK" from pure...any particular fabric? Especially if they have kids. Forget Shien and Temu, they should be avoided at all costs, but Primark? I don't personally shop there, but I get why people do. And "buy second hand" isn't an answer because not all of us are a size 10 or 12 with tons of options on the second hand or upcucled market 🤦🏻♀️

What about interwoven natural fabrics like cotton & linen? Or what about viscose mixed in with these?

I work in fashion retail store, it's a spanish brand, comparable to Mango. And let me tell you something - clothes in general are overpriced. I regularly by for myself in other well-known Turkish brand, and the quality is same for the most part for at least half off the price at the brand where I work. Even if you DO pay for the quality, most of the time you are paying for the brand's name. Ppl should educate themselves, so they would spend their money much smarter

I totally understand your position here and can’t disagree with it. One perspective you might want to consider is that a lot of the stores that you would consider acceptable don’t come made in larger sizes, or if they do they’re not made in the proper way for a larger body, they also tend to be sack shaped.

I learnt to sew so I’d be able to make a lot of my clothing, to save money and avoid purchasing from unethical sources. It’s insane how much more wear I get out of my clothes now and how long they last.

I’m a product designer & I fight for better quality every day, but the truth is the consumer needs to change their buying habits. My boss won’t authorize a change that raises the prices if you aren’t willing to pay for it.

Shein clothes has the quality of cheap costumes. The seams are done poorly so that they can produce more clothes faster. It is insane.

We have so many people saying don’t buy shein etc, ok then give people cheap substitutes, or at least cheaper because most of these sustainable brands charge $100 for a cotton tshirt and most of us don’t have that sort of financial freedom. Most people shop at shein because they don’t have many options that they can afford, not because its their dream…
