I set level-up points by story progress. had 4 legs of the story, 5 levels per leg of the journey, roughly 5 events to happen in each leg.

our Dm after one of my hairbrained stunts work. I was going to level you gus up but the Bard had to go and make the BBEG cry and run off like a bitch.... I can't help that my intimidation is a +11.

had to kill a chromaric white dragon and storm giant to get from level 8 to 10. then I had to kill a black dragon and a phasing spider the size of a house to get to level 11. I think my dm is doing pretty good on leveling us

I'm confused. As a newer DM, there's up in everything you defeat and do right? Then there are xp milestones to reach for each level? So, why does the DM dictate when a character levels up? Am I missing something here?

This was us a few sessions ago. Massive dungeon crawl, loads of monsters, backstory exploration for all of us, struck a deal with the super scary wife of the BBEG to bring down her husband. Then we all woke up next to the campfire, spotty memories of our backstory only, no memories of the deal, and no lasting damage. DM cackled when he said no xp.
