I’m not Oaxacan, but I will never forget about how people have ridiculed, disrespected, mocked, and abused the Indigenous Peoples of Mexico. All of a sudden they’ve got short term memory about colorist comments or jokes they made about “La India Maria” 😤😡

I think the disconnect is that it’s not a trend lol. Just bc posted videos of it doesn’t mean it’s a trend to them

you said it PERFECTLY! they wanna call our culture and traditions “trends” and “styles” but this is our everyday: NOT A COSTUME. they even try to argue that being mexican and indigenous is always synonymous with one another, and this idea perpetuates the erasure of our pueblos and tribes that have been scrutinized since spanish colonization

I’m from Oaxaca & I commented under a girls page that did a pop up. I told them I loved it if they had some acknowledgment towards indigenous people. Not a single like lol cause all of a sudden I’m getting asked

My family is from Mexico. From many different ranchos. I’m a Chicano myself. Am I allowed to wear the braids? I’ve seen many takes on it but I’m just not sure. Many women in my family wear these but I never did. But I want to start representing my family, community, & culture.

I respect your opinion all love but ima wear my ribbon as protest i will rage for my parents/raza and make the silent complaint people uncomfortable with them. I haven't wore my braids ever since I was little cause I'd be called India maria and people talk their ish but as an adult I will wear my hair as such with ribbon as such as a political statement. since they cant speak up and dress how it is how they want due to being profiled i will. I dont see it as a tend at all tbh

This is exactly why I dislike this trend and the word “fashion” being put onto indigenous cultures, because for us indigenous peoples our traditional customs aren't a "fashion". We don't wear our traditional customs within our cultures as a "fashion element" especially when many of our traditional clothings, jewelry, and cultural hairstyles etc……that hold very important values to us that have historical, cultural, and spiritual meanings that is tied a specific indigenous community identity/heritage/and our oppression……💯

My mom, as a Mestiza in Zacatecas, wore these braids as a child. My white Mexican neighbor used to make similar braids for her child. Some of us Mexican kept some native practices. Mexican culture is a mixture of Native, European, and African cultures. Feel free to wear the braids as long as you acknowledge where it came from

This is so true being from Oaxaca has always been hard because people would shame me for my color and for looking “India” and now people want to find it cool to do “Mexican braids” when they know nothing about our people that do these braids on a daily I’ve always been called India Maria just because I have two braids crazy how people think this is ok

I love that you mentioned other indigenous communities outside of Mexico because you’re so right! The women of my grandma’s pueblo in El Salvador also wore braids with laces, my grandma would do it on me

In the Mexican community why is it an insult to be called Oaxacan. I used to be embarrassed of being indigenous Mexican but the culture is so rich and beautiful I needed to open up and learn more

Not from Oaxaca but I am part of Puebla and Veracruz náhuas. Many generations are forgetting where they come from and from my parents pueblos are very few kids who knows the language un like me both sides of my family they stop for the reason family that was left from this world were the only ones that knew and didn’t get the chance to teach my parents their siblings. I may not know many words but I always try to learn.

i agree! alot of ppl are trying to wear the braids saying "reconnecting w their roots"😭 i just find it to be such a lazy response bc they dont even know what cultures they are taking from. most the time theyre contributing to homogenizing the indigenous ppls of mexico.

Thank you for saying this 👏 many of my family members are harassed for wearing their trenzas and many do up end up being found dead with little to no knowledge on their death to which ppl simply label as natural causes. I fully support reconnecting and learning indigenous ppl but it’s important to stick to your own culture and respect other cultures by not appropriating it because yes even natives can appropriate each other’s culture
