Back in the day they had windows on the inside of the house, called them robber windows. They were to rob natural light from one room and bring it in to another where they didn’t have electricity. ♥️

I wonder if there was a window opposite of the enclosed window because you were taxed at one point based on the amount of windows you had like glass tax maybe New York had at one time

I bet that window is for lighting that stairwell before electrical lights and too narrow for a oil lamp. Cause this house is beautiful

We went to a tenement museum in NY and they had an internal window between a bedroom and another room, they said it was for airflow when the place was rented to lots of families.

Most likely those stairs at one point was only accessible outside… renovations were done and the door/walls added to make the basement stairs inside hence closing in the window
