I'd tell him I won't marry a man that thinks it's okay for his family to mistreat his wife so unless he's willing to do something about it there won't be a wedding

reminds me of how my in-laws would refer to me as my partners "friend" or "roommate" even though we had been together for years and were raising our kids together. his mother even told me once I should find a nice guy with a good job and a house to take care of me. as soon as we got married suddenly I was now considered family. people are so weird

He’s used to a toxic family dynamic and if he doesn’t acknowledge it and work to change he’ll always placate the loudest and meanest person in the room to everyone else’s detriment.

Don’t dish it if you can’t take the repercussions. Partner needs to rethink his stance

Your SIL isn’t the problem. Your fiancé is the problem for not defending you.

OP didn’t even say anything bad. If fiancé wants peace then he should tell his sister to knock it off

AnaHongo :
As sad as it sounds, I don't think she should marry the guy. This is just one incident pre-wedding but will he still expect HER to be the one apologizing every time HIS family offends her? Actually will he expect her to bow down to "keep the peace" when it's *him* the one doing the insulting? Yeah, maybe I've been on Reddit too long but this sounds like an issue that can and will escalate, or the goalposts will keep moving after they're married.

"things to go smooth until the wedding" is key here, that's a huge red flag and OP you need to invite yourself from that wedding.

Things always always get worse, not better. Advice from grandma: Make sure your relationship is 95% perfect to you b4 you marry, bc that number drops 20-30% afterwards. If you start at 70%, failure is going to happen.

"that's inappropriate" is not a phrase worthy of an apology! wtf?! I would let this engagement go on and on without setting a date or planning a thing until you see this man step up for you. if he doesn't then he's not your person.

You have to stop that behavior immediately! I made my MIL cry the first time we met. She was rude. I responded. She complained to my husband & he laughed & told her not to f w/me. She never tried me again. Set boundaries w/everyone🖤

ThinkMotivational :
OP should tell her fiancé that his “keep the peace” stance is him allowing his sister to bully his wife. She should then tell him that if he’s looking for a punching bag for his sister that he can f**k then maybe they should rethink their relationship. He’s supposed to love and protect her, not allow someone to harass and bully her. And if he can’t stand up for her when she’s wronged, then maybe they shouldn’t be together.

This happened with my first marriage. They can dish it out but they can’t take it. After you’re married they will say “well…. You don’t have kids yet so we are not related by blood.” I would have a conversation with her alone, without her family. No raised voices. Bring a list of bullet points. Make sure you say “Up until now you have said and done… blah… going forward how are you going to fix this?…” if she elevates her voice just ask her to take a minute to relax because all your doing is clearing the air between the two of you so that you can have a relationship that benefits everyone and the reality is people act strangely around wedding.
