I have a friend who is very intelligent but believes in water witchcraft 😄 I don’t get it.

Im athiest and agree about magical thinking.but i've seen it work many times even in a blind test. It was taught me and it worked even in blind tests

Canaries in coal mines is legit science. Their higher respiratory rate will be affected by lack of oxygen in the air or noxious gasses like CO before humans are aware.

I used to think the way you are until I saw my city city workers. Using divining rods to find the pipe in the road and I watched him do it over and over again. You might want to try some life experience. Before you come out here, just spewing and s***

A driller in Arkansas gives his clients the option of having a geologist predict water or his Witcher. If geo is wrong he still charges if Witcher is it’s free. He put his money on Witcher. And still has his money.

Good point, indoctrinated by the local culture can be overwhelming to overcome…many will likely suffer from cognitive dissonance if they become enlightened to reality.

Water companies, oil companies, farmers, still pay for these services, so they must feel there is value. So perhaps magic has a place. Newtonian scientists thought quantum physisists were magical thinking. Infact I would say, be cautious of recommending people don’t reach beyond the proven.

Sir, you need to get out and about. It’s common for drillers in our area. Saved us a ton of money.

“You know, it’s always interesting when someone speaks with absolute certainty about what doesn’t exist—especially when they’ve never experienced it firsthand. I’ve dowsed for water on construction sites myself, and I’ll be the first to admit I don’t fully understand how it works—but I’ve seen it work. Repeatedly. Accurately. That’s not magical thinking. That’s lived experience.
And sure, science may not have a clear mechanism for dowsing—yet. But let’s not forget that observation does influence outcome, as shown in the double-slit experiments. Reality isn’t always as fixed or mechanical as we’d like to believe.
Sometimes the issue isn’t that something doesn’t work—it’s that the tools used to measure it are too limited. When someone dismisses things they don’t understand with sarcasm or arrogance, it says more about their mindset than the phenomenon itself. Doubt can be healthy—but when it hardens into denial, it stops being critical thinking and starts becoming dogma.”

Just become you can't explain it means it's magic? There is nothing less scientific than assumptions you refuse to question. Open your eyes.

Sorry but I have seen them find water and sewer lines many times. I have used one to spot where to drill my well. No study, just real life!

Its taught egineering. Its base on actuall science. Now, it may not find a deep well but it will locate water lines.
