Not divisive at all. There is a massive cultural difference between us and them. They have treated us as though we are beneath them for so long that many of them actually believe it. However, they are being sold the same lies about us as the rest of the world. I am seeing an awakening just not fast enough.

I am African. And I’ve noticed a need to commercialize our cultures. It’s currently what’s happening with afrobeats, people who grew up listening to it don’t find it the same - the genre has evolved into something else so that it can be more palatable to the west. I understand your point, essence’s target audience is black Americans - and it has strayed from its initial mission. I think the owners and the management should have stuck with the script instead of trying to become akin to Afronation or any other festival for the diaspora.

They want our dollars and authenticity but won’t get it. We are the blueprint, often imitated but never duplicated!

As a New Orleans native another reason is that essence fest is not as inclusive to the local culture as they try to portray so many local vendors have started to opt out. You would think hosting an event here you would utilize local talent but nope. The reason essence fest works is the essence of our beautiful city & it’s residents

Oh well, the only thing I can say is maybe New Orleans can have a festival similar and just call it something else and so that the city doesn’t lose that revenue and let that essence festival and all of them go. I hate to say it it would be the end of an era, but it’s gonna be that anyway cause they’re gonna end up going out of business

We need to stop selling our businesses. As soon as we allow other folks to start buying shares, we lose control. Look at Carol’s daughter hair products that was started by a black woman who sold it to L’Oreal. She eventually bought her company back, but we need to stop doing this kind of stuff. All money ain’t good money keep our legacy!
