Yes! We do it beforehand so you don’t have to worry about it after; so you don’t have to talk to or see anyone when you’re in that grief immediately after. So people can just leave on their own time. It’s for the clients. 😭

im really glad my vet/the techs did it pre putting my sweet bunny down. They let me have so much time and space so i didnt have to linger once it was done. It gave me a sense of dignity and grace so I didn't have to be afraid of people in the waiting room watching me grieve, not knowing if they were also about to go through the same thing as me

I’ve had a lot of dogs and a lot of veterinarians because we’ve moved a lot. All of them take payment prior to euthanizing pets. It makes complete sense to take care of payment and telling the staff what arrangements you’d like to make BEFOREHAND for all the reasons you have stated. Also, for vets that don’t require payment prior to euthanizing pet, there are those rare occasions when somebody comes out of the exam room and doesn’t want to pay because they’re leaving without their pet.

As a vet, this is absolutely it! I do say that part specifically each time when I'm going over the process with the owner, so they expect it and fully understand that THIS is where it's coming from, not just ensuring payment before we do anything. I find most owners kinda balk at first until I mention the part that I only do that so they can spend as much time as they want afterwards and then leave without having to stand in the lobby and worry about checking out after, and they always respond with an "ooh, ok, i hadn't even considered that part, that would actually be so much better, thank you." So I think being upfront with clients as to why we do this in the moment is so important, too!

When taking pre-payment for a euthanasia, I always explained that it was for their benefit and they can leave without having to stop at the front desk after. I never had anyone question or complain about it.

YES. The last thing I wanted was to pay for my pet AFTER euthanasia. I want to put on blinders and go straight out the door. One vet even had a separate exit directly from the room to the parking lot which was so perfect

We never ask for payment up front. We will just send clients an invoice a few days later

I always preface that for their own convenience we get paperwork and payment done first that way we can focus on their pet and make sure all of their attention and love will be on their pet and then they can leave when they are ready

I always tell people "I'll get you checked out now so that you don't have to worry about anything afterward." Most people are thankful they can just walk out after and don't even have to look at me at the desk if they don't want to.

It’s so when after your upset and should be focused on grief you don’t have to be stopped you can just leave and not stand there crying or upset my vet has done it for me and I appreciate it I don’t have to worry about anything but him

when my family euthanized my childhood dog, my parents clinic (where i ended up volunteering & continue to go to) sent an invoice to be paid at the next visit or online, and we were so grateful. before the procedure or when picking up remains definitely sounds like the best idea, but i get why some clinics may not be comfortable waiting. i wish more people considered our point of view and how some things are done out of genuine kindness

I take in a lot of rescue animals which also means I lose a lot of animals over time. I walk in knowing exactly what I want and ask to pay for it all before I go to the room. I was disappointed recently when our vet turned corporate and required a full exam and discussion for a pet who was senior, had advanced disease that the vet said had no options left, and the pet could not eat or walk any longer. We decided to change vets after that.

Thank you for speaking up about this. I have a STORYTIME you’d just love! We had to fire a client after some egregious behavior surrounding their euthanasia appointment (I should clarify there were other issues prior to this one but this was the last straw). Would LOVE to share!

my vet had a separate room for me to say goodbye to my cat that I had grown up with for my whole childhood. it was before anything had started so that we could spend as much time as we needed with him before, during, and after

I appreciate having the ability to have clients put a card on file before hand. Then they can stay in the private comfort room while we run the card and print their invoice. Not always possible and some clients don't like that option but it is very nice for some clients.

People like to have a little bit of control in these situations. Give them options. Pay after or before? Pay today or pay in 48 hours when we send an invoice? Most pay the day of but how they’re paying is their choice. They usually appreciate that

people are never happy. we ask for payment before we are cruel, we ask after we are heartless. we never win in this industry 😮💨

we don't always ask for payment first. but if you can see it's going to be a rough and emotional one we will get the payments finished and done with so that you can take your time and just leave when you want to leave. we will also let you skip the que and make everyone wait if you come out after the euth and did not pay beforehand

We either have them pay when they come to pick up the ashes or send them a bill a little while after. If they are a non client or one who doesn’t come often we will have them pay because they aren’t an established client and not sure if they’d pay

we offer to do in the room before so that the family does not have ti stop in lobby when they are upset. We also try ti use a room that they can take all time they need and leave through a door Not in waiting room. They can leave whenever are ready

Yes! As a CSR, I usually say “most people like to take care of payment and paperwork while our tech places the catheter. I can bring everything to you now if that’s ok?” If it’s a well-known client and they have to decide on urns, we will let them pay at pick-up, but that experience isn’t the best either.
