When I first discovered Toren, I saw videos of him at the exact age my son is now, and the similarities were uncanny. In this clip, Toren explains something I’ve experienced countless times with my son… the mental loop. Toren was able to explain what’s actually happening in that loop.. something my son, at this stage, can’t yet communicate. And hearing it from him was like finally being handed a flashlight in the dark. I’m just so incredibly grateful for this conversation. 💙 #autismawareness #asd 🌀 What Are Mental Loops in Autism? They often look like: • Repeating the same question or phrase over and over • Asking for something and then rejecting it (e.g., “Cars!” → “No Cars!” → “Cars!”) • Repeating a request even after it’s fulfilled or denied • Getting “stuck” between two conflicting impulses This is often due to: • Difficulty processing and regulating emotions • Executive functioning challenges, like switching tasks or letting go of one idea • Anxiety or sensory dysregulation, where the brain keeps looping as a coping mechanism • Language and communication delays, where the child doesn’t yet have the words to express what they actually mean (e.g., “I want to want Cars, but something feels off and I don’t know how to say that”) • Desire for control, routine, or predictability 🧠 Why It Happens: • Their brain might be trying to process a desire and a sensory/emotional barrier at the same time — like wanting to go swimming but being overwhelmed by the idea of the cold water, the noise, or a previous bad experience. • It can also be a form of external processing — thinking out loud to regulate internal conflict. 💬 What Helps: • A calm and validating response like: “It sounds like you’re having a hard time deciding if you want to swim right now. It’s okay to feel confused.” • Visual supports and choices (e.g., “Do you want to swim now or in 10 minutes?”) • Patience, co-regulation, and modeling flexible thinking #idiotpodcast #autismawareness @Toren_Wolf
