My poodle fully understands English (and some sign language) and can be reasoned with. I actually regret the ways I bought into dog training culture when he was a puppy. Handling him in an authoritarian way only eroded our relationship and gave him anxiety. He’s 18 years old now and we let him do whatever he wants.

The average intelligence of a dog is equivalent to a 2-2.5 year old child. So, yes, they can understand limited language and cause/effect. In fact, gentle parenting is a lot like balanced training which seems to be becoming more popular due to positive results.
