@exotic.pet.vet: Come with me to place a hormone implant in this pet bird! 🦜 Often, birds may be stimulated to be hormonal by excessive petting, especially on the back, lack of dark time or proper sleep, perceived mates or nests, and improper diet. When birds are hormonally active, they may lay eggs which can cause issues such as prolapses, dystocia or egg binding, egg-yolk peritonitis, and weak bones. They can also experience behavioral issues such as aggression or feather plucking, masturbation, and sexual frustration. The implant we’re using is called Deslorelin and it is a long-acting GnRH agonist. To place the implant, the bird is sedated. Here I used a combination of butorphanol and midazolam. We also applied a topical lidocaine cream to the skin. After cleaning the area, a large needle is used to place the implant in the subcutaneous space between their spine and shoulders. Total treatment length can vary depending on species, but hopefully this implant will keep her comfortable through breeding season! #parrot #parrots #bird #birds #amazonparrot #zoo #exotics #wildlife #rescue #conservation #animals #pets #nature #vet #vetmed #veterinarian #veterinary #medicine #obgyn #veterinarymedicine #medical #doctor #premed #prevet #vettech #wearfigs #scrublife #hormones

Lidocaine isn’t the best option considering the natural heart rate of birds

i work at an exotic vet & our doctor says that placing deslorelin into birds is an old practice & with new research, it isn’t good to do & she could lose her license doing that. is this a state by state rule or?

This is very interesting to watch, we have an alexandrine that is very hormonal even though we have don’t everything possible to discourage her. She gets it on the front of her, I’m not 100% sure if it’s in the top of her thigh but she just gets freezing and insertion. We have been able to watch it being done, she did very well. To discourage picking at it when it first goes in our vet uses glue on both sides so she doesn’t focus on one side more than the other. We have tried lupron shots but this works better. For an amazon how often are you finding she needs a new one? We get about 4 months between them according to her metabolism.

Do you give your sedation protocol intranasally? We don't see huge amount in my practice, but I'm always looking for bird tips, especially for anesthesia.
