Born on May 4, 1979, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, he grew up in a running family and became a standout athlete at the University of Notre Dame. Shay won multiple national titles in distance running and was respected for his work ethic and perseverance. Tragically, Ryan Shay died on November 3, 2007, at the age of 28 during the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in New York City. He collapsed just 5½ miles into the race and was later pronounced dead at Lenox Hill Hospital. An autopsy revealed he had an enlarged heart, a condition known as cardiac hypertrophy, which likely contributed to his sudden cardiac arrest. His death shocked the running community and highlighted the risks even elite athletes can face.
