what a week. so much is a work in progress so i have no real updates on processes that worked well so here's my mess of training hypotheses | as these dogs progress through their sports, there's always going to be something needing working on. the going gets harder as the level gets harder. i've found it challenging to fit these needs into the week with the business but last week the balancing act worked. dock: missed filming pup's turn-he jumped consistently. the approach i hadn't tried-no running start, engage his twitchiness at the edge, and throw-bingo. entered him in the next dock trials. pup has one recorded 3ft jump and 2 "good trys". since switching enzo to a bumper from wubba he's been more consistent catching it which fixed his "sit in a chair" jump form immediately and will help w distance. in trying to get girl to track the toy, she's shown that dogs can actually dive - this isn't good form but a bit funny. a wip. psa: enzo worked on engagement in public places (was diminishing) and keeping his head up around toys for application around decoys. girl had her first psa lesson. this is a part of the big picture to fix her rally issues. also i've seen her intensity increase as her drive has built up from adrenaline sports (lure and bh) so why not. i'll feel better trialing her in psa before enzo. scentwork: i've been discouraged about riley's excellent sw after a 0% trial last winter and a so-so trial earlier this year. same goes for girl's HD sw. haven't done a akc sw trial in a while but we're back at it and it's looking better. i put girl on regular sw for a bit to get better indications which i think helped but i think we have to go back to that for a bit before more HD tho indication looks a lot better. rally: girl won't be trialing in rally until she's ready. she was looking better a few months after the winter break to work on these issues but it was a bandaid on a bullet wound. working on the same engagement games i did with enzo along with restarting all of her cues from foundations. then she will go into OB where the excercises are less and shorter and we will see. i managed not to film kanes work on recall over jump (his masters crux) - a wip. agility-pup's weaves have always been flawless until a few months ago when weaves to nowhere (corner) tripped him up and we worked on it then i started crowding him as he didn't need me so close and pop outs were a problem. building independence on the weaves with treats on a frisbee out from the end of the weave exit and growing the distance and position i can be. he's predictably slower as this is hard. barnhunt: practice and trial this weekend. barnhunt is still a wip for all of them in different ways given the limited access to practice. bo: working on his forever engrained likely genetic reactivity-progress report pending. ross: having the feral guy tag along to see the world as much as i can. his chain leash got wrapped around my finger in the front yard and accidentally dropped it while trying not to drop riley's leash in the same hand. grabbed for him scared him then remembered im a dog trainer and cued girl to run to the door and ross followed. while i don't engage with ross like a regular dog, somehow there's trust there and the real world can't be novel for any sense of security - both his security with me and my security that i have recourse if he ever slipped by or got loose. he doesn't respond to "regular" dog training - he finds most normal proximity aversive and training tools will never be a good option for him. side note i wonder how he'd take to scentwork training at a distance - like i need more to train.
