We didn't do a revolution against our fascist dictatorship, we let our dictator die in bed without paying for his crimes. We are not a good example of anything

La transición en España fue un teatrillo, no es ejemplo de nada, el partido del dictador sigue en el Parlamento y jamás se han condenado debidamente sus crímenes.

oír democracy didn't judge the crimes of the dictatorship. A lot of people with blood in their hands were politicians during democracy. Literal torturers were free and in a position of power (search for Billy el niño)

I think as American you over hype a little bit Spain, the transition wasn't peaceful, we didn't fight, one of the political parties came from the dictatorship(PP) and now, in general, we don't fight for nothing, we don't have the energy to go out as France and the right wing is eating us slowly and loud. Spanish politics are interesting to read? yes. Are we an example to follow? no when we are servants of many countries.

It wasn’t peaceful and it wasn’t a model. There was police brutality against protestors and a failed coup d’etat. Plus, the pact of silence only meant that the dictatorship’s crimes were covered and the people who suffered repression under it didn’t get closure.

Actually this was the worst because no one paid for their crimes and also the francoist elite made the constitution so basically the king is just the sucesor of Franco

It's crazy when you think about how recent the dictatorship was. People still remember it!

ya pero aún es legal hacer apología del fascismo porque nuestra "democracia" está construida sobre el fascismo, no se les echó, se les dejó disimular un poco y seguir en la política

Yeah, as a Spaniard here let me just say this: not because there wasn't a war to change it doesn't mean it was violent. Because hell yeah it was, there was a lot of repression, even until the 80s. And no, Adolfo Suárez didn't do sh*t. He used to be a Minister with Franco, he just know how to roll with the unstoppable wave of freedom that was coming. Because it was the people who pushed back to legalize political parties, to recognize languages... And honestly we swipped under the rug a lot of problems because it wasn't a strong enough democracy now and like we say in Spain "de aquellos polvos estos lodos". So no, Transition was not all rainbows and butterflies as they have been tried to sell.

hey appreciate u meant this in v good faith but as someone who is both Spanish and specialised in historical memory studies at uni, Spain is v much acknowledged as like, the opposite as a model for a transition into democracy (particularly if we consider specific repression experienced long past the transition in Euskadi and Cataluña) - the transition effectively handed power back over to the monarchy (where we had previously been a republic) and kept the power mostly with those who sided w Franco (look at PP) and as others have mentioned there were no trials for crimes committed. The institutionalised silence has made it v difficult to speak up about the dictatorship and means there’s still lots of unresolved tension, and I think where democracy is built on silence it’s always vulnerable to fascism and national forgetting

our transition to democracy wasnt just because we're so civil that we didn't need a revolution. There were a lot of intenational preassures.

The problem is that Franco's dictatorship was never truly condemned, and for many, it remained an acceptable form of government. The fascists faced no accountability, they felt no shame for their crimes. The king, handpicked by Franco himself, ensured continuity, and many ministers from the old regime smoothly transitioned into democracy without facing justice. As a result, fascist elements persisted, lying dormant, waiting for an opportunity to reemerge. Now, we are paying the price for that failure.

For the first time in the history of Spain, seven politicians belonging to five different political parties managed to reach an agreement and draft the current Constitution

I'm in a 50% about she said. Franco leave open Road to democracy but Spain did a constitution in the 78 set square and protractor for and by the Anglo-Saxon world. furthermore, as an American, you have no right to say anything to Spain about colonization. Just look at the percentage of Native Americans in the north and south

One of my great-grandfathers spent his life in prison after the war, accused of being a unionist. They only released him so he could die at home, with my great-grandmother. That was when he met his grandchildren for the first time. He died within months.

This really isn’t that true though; it’s still a deeply divided country and typically the party you vote for is the side that your grandparents fought for in the civil war and both main partied hate each other like this so
