As a D3 college coach - only 16 sessions in the spring with no scrimmages and starting the preseason in middle of August and not Aug 1st.. would allow the players more recovery, could do more building the team shape, principles etc

short season - leads to injuries and requires the current unlimited subs. In women’s soccer it ultimately perpetuates the players who are built like tanks who can survive two games a week.
