It's actually best policy just to trust them and not to ask them to leave a item for a number of reasons. For one, it opens up a weird legal gray area. because let's say they hand you their car keys, and then they come back and they pay you and they go out to the car and they say that their car keys don't work. well you were the last person to hold on to them so they have a right to then request law enforcement to make a report of damage to property... and you say oh that's bullshit, It's actually not. years ago I was working at a business where we had a similar thing happen and they left their bag. they came back they paid their bill and we gave them their bag back and upon searching their bag they said their watch was missing. they called the police they reported the theft saying that the business stole it and guess what the business had to pay for the watch because they were the last people to handle that property and they didn't do their due diligence on checking what was in the bag. So it's best not to ask them to leave a item and if they run out on the bill then just make a report about it because you put yourself in more legal trouble by asking for personal property.
