I think the gen 1 games didnt have gender specific designs yet, hence why it wasn't like that in the anime. I might be wrong

The pink Butterfree in the Pokémon anime first appeared in the anime on 1997. Gender differences in Pokémon were added later introduced in Generation IV on 2006. Since the addition of the gender diffences the original wing pattern was fixed to line up with current information.
