Is this just an American thing? Coz in UK most people hold the door when they see someone else is coming through. Regardless of gender. Sometimes we do a little jog if we're too far away so the person doesn't have to keep holding it. 😂

UK its just polite to hold the door open for whoever is behind. Its normal I dont get why its a problem. If there are a few people behind then the one who just walked through the door will hold it till the next person grabs it.

That’s how I’m brought up. I’ll always get in a standoff with anyone to let them through first.

GenX (50yo) man 🙋♂️to echo other comments I think this might be a US thing. Here in the UK (and everywhere I’ve been in Europe) it’s normal for people to hold the door for other, regardless of gender or age. It’s just polite. I wouldn’t think twice if you held the door for me. 🤷♂️

Guys what’s wrong with saying thank you and proceeding. In Italy, unfortunately, you will be standing there all day because everybody would go through the door and leave you holding it open, as has happened to me many times. 🤔

I hold doors for anyone and accept doors held for me by anyone. I gesture anyone to go before me and accept a gesture to go before someone by anyone. 🫵🤓

first year of Gen x here. I would try to grab the door and motion for you to and go through after saying thank you for the thought, but I wouldn't refuse to walk through it if you insisted. it's just nice to see people act considerate of one another

Probably depends how you hold the door open. Hold the door open as you walk through and they walk behind you everyone will walk in. Open it from the inside as if you are going to walk out most people will think they are being polite and step to the side to let you out. It’s not any deeper than that really.
