I disagree... give the joke items once in a while. Especially to a party that seems to lack imagination. Do it to see what practical use they can come up with for it. In the end, it's a game and supposed to be fun and an exercise in creativity.

Yeah, but then you have to come up with how it works. Like, does it work through quantum entanglement in the observer effect? Is there a magical component I can spoof? How is it perceiving the observer observation. A bat using echo location. What about dark vision or tremor sense?

DM once gave me a glove that made the light source of whatever they held (like a lantern) only visible to the person where this singular glove. So I carried a little torch into a cave filled with (hidden) spiders and webs. surprise attack from a hidden giant spider as it tried to web me up. web hits the torch, catches fire, which catches the giant spider on fire, which catches the entire web covered ceiling of the cave on fire, which then catches the 7 other giant spiders we didn't know about on fire, which then causes all 8 spiders to fall from the ceiling. 8 giant spider fight that was supposed to be the session... over in 2 liberal minutes, and it only lasted that long because he had to roll damage dice against his own spiders for fire and fall damage.

I gave my players a joke item that was a potion that would suck them into the bottle and release whoever was the last person to drink the potion was. They used it to trap a gelatinous cube in the bottle.

I helped another creator make an item called a cake knife that would turn small objects into a random cake when cut....then i thought "i wonder if that would work if you cut someone in the heart with it." and imediatly regreted even conceving that concept
