I disagree and here's why: Jinu was manipulated by Gwi-ma into believing all three of them could have a better life. We can tell because in his memory he looks almost surprised that they arent allowed in. Also, during that time in history, a king was allowed to kill anyone who went against him in any way. So when Jinu was called to the Kings temple he had to follow the King's orders and when he found out they couldn't go inside with him, he had to leave them behind or else he would be risking his and his family's life. In his memories you can also see his mother pulling his sister away from the doors because she already knew that if they didn't listen then they would all be exicuted for going against the kings orders. His sister was upset because she was too young to know the consequences of not following orders. Also when someone becomes a demon they automatically have to follow Gwi-ma's orders or else they'll be killed so Jinu also had no choice in that as well. It was pretty much a lose lose situation for Jinu that whole time.

disagree because we know demon king can "turn up the voices" which he did right before he *betrayed* rumi. you can physically see him in pain he basically tortured him into submission. he looks entirely dissociated until Rumi sings "this is what it sounds like" also...since we know demon king can turn up voices, or remove memories he can literally alter memories so Jinu might have an unreliable take of his own memories after 400 years- we know he left his family which was a mistake he clearly regrets every single day so yes thats a bad move but im also pretty sure if he denied the kings invitation it could've led to his de*th? and one mistake took him straight to the demon world he had no shot to redeem himself as he was trying to do here a bit. not saying hes a hero or something. but he didnt deserve his death in my opinion

The kiss would have been pointless as she would have found out the truth but falling in love with someone too quickly over finally feeling seen and not hiding is a very human response and makes sense especially in the context of the film

I’m going to say one thing. Jinu is 300+ years old and honestly he did deserve that ending since I’m pretty his purpose was to help Rumi defeat Gwi-Ma I honestly still feel pretty bad for jinu and his family since the palace he entered only accepted him and not his family I’m pretty sure

My hot take is that im actually very happy they didn’t go farther into the “romance” aspect with jinu and rumi, the subtext is there but I think leaving them more as friends who yearn is significantly better

I think Gwi-Ma has tweaked his story. Convinced him he abandoned them for some purely selfish reason. I really think there's more context to the situation that has been buried and it's not as straight forward as Jinu presented. But who knows really, maybe he was just an AH lol

I read in another post that “self sacrifice is seen as atonement of the soul” in some cultures over there. It wasnt redemption. He saw a way to give back to a world he hurt, and in doing so likely earned the path to reincarnation

there's a few things to consider here, and I don't completely disagree with your statement. however looking at cultures and then also looking at how evil manipulates... there is a chance that he was led to believe that he abandoned them but if he was "invited" by the ruler to come to the Castle if he wouldn't really be able to refuse.. and based on the flashbacks you can tell he's uncomfortable. and so with the combination of being manipulated and the fact that some things would have been out of his control it's not as simple as if that would have happened in today's world in Western society. to add to that I feel like some of his character design was redemption. because in the beginning it stated that he only ever did things for himself, and in the end he is not so with that is why I say you're not completely wrong but if he's not truly dead I don't think that's a bad thing either. as she said that wasn't everything he was when he finally admitted what had happened in the past. I would love for them to touch on what actually happened in the past reverse little flashbacks that were manipulated. and I still say some of that was manipulated into making him believe he did worse than he actually did just based on how some of the interactions went such as the signing with the card from the little girl and how he responded. basically I think there's a lot more to unpack than what we were shown from the past in that situation. especially as culturally correct the show seems to be (based on what I have seen those in Korean culture say on the movie) but again I actually agree that what happened probably did need to happen but if he's not truly gone I think that's perfectly okay as well. but we will hopefully see if there's ever a sequel!

Controversial take: Rumi wouldn't have had demon markings if her aunt didn't pelt her with until demon/shaming stuff since she was super young.

I mostly agree, I’m very conflicted on Jinu because he has 💀 thousands of people and for what? To forget that he left his family because he didn’t want to be homeless again? I get he originally didn’t want to, as he most likely thought they could go with him in the palace.I don’t think he’s necessarily a bad person, but he’s no saint either.

i dont like the romance aspect, i like the connection tho. my thoughts are that what we saw of his past isnt what actually happened tho. human minds are VERY susceptible to manipulation and Gwi-Ma has had 400 years to change the story

I know a lot gets put on Jinu for what happened with his family, and that is understandable with what information we have. I’m not entirely convinced that, after 400 years, Gwi-Ma didn’t manipulate those memories a bit. If he has the ability to block them, I’d wager he can alter them, even through simple psychology if not through powers. Who knows if we’ll ever know.

saying he worked for gwi-ma is a bit of a stretch the implication is the dems dont have a choice. as for him leaving his family im actually on the side of what we see is a lie told by gwi-ma yo distorted the truth and deepen jinues shame at not being able to save his family even after he gave uo his soul to do it

It’s not “because he’s hot” him being around literally healed her voice and he didn’t have a choice but to keep working with Gwi-Ma since he owned his soul and I’m not 100% convinced he left his family maybe it was Gwi-Ma playing tricks with his memory to keep him shameful. I think had we gotten the full 3hr version it would’ve been easier to see the other side of him

I don’t think he actually left his family, I think he just asked to be great at singing and make money so Gwi-ma (like a djinn) played with his request and made him leave his family. Then convinced him that that is what he wished for. He didn’t deserve his end

My take was that the second story was a lie to get her to distance herself from him. I get the reincarnation thing that was said but I think giving his soul to her he seizes to exist. Idk just my take.

she also didnt really love him in my mind. she loved the idea of Jinu: someone who loved all of her, the markings and all. like in the time where Jinu lived, he wouldn't have been able to take his family into the king's palace, but he still feels guilty for choosing himself over his family.

So when watching his intro, it is implied by Gwi-Ma that this is the first time Jinu voluntarily does something for him. The reality is that Gwi-Ma coerces or forces some of the demons by amplifying their shame, and Jinu is clearly one of him. So yeah, while he’s not the golden boy, he didn’t just “work for him.”

What if….his recollection of what happened is Gwi-Ma’s form of manipulation and the truth is somewhere in between. Gwi-Ma tried to make Rumi think she was something that she wasn’t. I can only assume he did that with everyone to keep their souls. Once Jinu realized he wasn’t what Gwi-Ma said he was, he got is soul back and was set free. Which, even though It sucks, It was a perfect ending to his personal story.

Yea but we don’t know the actual truth about him leaving his family, in one flashback weapons were pulled on them. He could have been forced into the castle and filled with shame over being separated. Gwi-ma also makes it clear Jinu isn’t the most loyal demon to him.
