That’s actually insane like I literally almost forgot the fact that it’s been this long and it’s still isn’t cleaned up 🤦🏻♀️

The fine should double from the previous day. Then after 30 days they cease operations as a company if it’s not cleaned up.

INSANNNEEE. I watched a documentary about a big corporation that was allowed to bury trash, dump liquid into the cities river as long as they paid a settlement of $2 million-ish every year… And instead of cleaning it up, they would just pay the fine. Honestly, so heartbreaking and it’s been going on for over 25+ years. I can’t even think about how many corps do this. :(

not only that they are also getting a lawsuit that is saying *allegedly* "at least seven people, including a 1-week-old infant, died as a result of the toxic chemicals leak." from THIS YEAR and why did it derail in the first place ? because the train company was cheap and "reduced railway workers per train increased train lengths and weight."

My uncle is working on the clean up efforts. He works for some environmental company. They are cleaning it up. He said because of the publicity it got the ppm they had to get the chemical to is much lower than it normally would be, so it's been a really long job trying to get it down to basically zero.

"As part of the settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency, Norfolk Southern agreed to pay the EPA $235 million for cleanup costs. Just $25 million will be allocated over 20 years for a community health program and another $15 million to set up long-term monitoring of surface and groundwater.
.
The actual fine for poisoning a whole community with cancer-causing chemicals is just $15 million. This is less than 1 percent of the gross profits the company made so far this year and just slightly more than the $13.4 million that Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw made himself last year."
