@sparklewithamberraye: OK hear me out. I love talking to people and I truly love helping them. But I used to be a full-blown people pleaser. I would offer free one-on-one business coaching calls, and people I had never even spoken to before would sign up. Instead of asking about business, they would unload all their trauma on me. I was caught off guard every time. I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t want to be cold or dismissive, but I was also not qualified to help with that kind of stuff. It was uncomfortable and honestly unfair to both of us. Eventually I had to draw a line. I started saying, I’m here to help you with your business, but I’m not equipped to handle personal trauma. What can we go over today to move your business forward? And almost every time, they would admit they didn’t actually want to work on their business. They just wanted someone to vent to. If you’re in the coaching space or leading a team, have boundaries. Make it clear from the start what people can expect from a session. You are the one who should direct the call. If you don’t, you’ll spend all your time playing therapist and watching people stay stuck.
