DISCLAIMER: This isn’t to excuse neglect, abuse, or emotional absence.❤️ It’s to make space for the complexity: That love and harm can coexist. That sacrifice isn’t always attunement. And that you’re allowed to grieve how love was given—even if it was real. 1. They worked long hours, not to avoid you—but to provide for you. At the time, it may have felt like absence. But in their mind, working was how they showed love..by giving you what they never had. (And you still deserved their presence). 2. They made sure you had food, clothes, and a roof even if they didn’t know how to give warmth or affection. Their love was tied to survival, not emotional availability. It was provision—not presence AND you still deserved the presence. 3. They got overwhelmed easily—but kept showing up the only way they knew how. Your parent may have been emotionally immature or reactive, but they stayed. They didn’t know how to soothe themselves, much less you. (AND YOU still deserved a parent that could do this). 4. They gave you advice or corrected you—not to criticize, but because that’s what love looked like to them. In their world, love meant “preparing you” or “toughening you up.” Not because you were bad but because they were scared. (AND YOU still deserved a parent that could disarm and regulate themselves while trying to reach you). 5. They did what they could—with the tools they were given. And sometimes… those tools were sharp. Sometimes, love was tangled up with control, anxiety, or fear. But there was love in there. It just didn’t always feel safe AND YOU deserved safety. 💛 #innerchildhealing #gentleparenting #traumarecovery #emotionalhealing #generationalhealing #attachmentwounds #parenting
