@havingagoodyear: Replying to @reaganbarlow How do you incorporate independent reading time into your middle or high school English class? 📖📚 In our classes, we’ve used a few different strategies. Sometimes students begin class with 10 minutes of independent reading, and other times we dedicate entire Fridays to it. On those days, we start with a First Chapter Friday read-aloud and then give students the remainder of the class to read independently while we conference with them. If you’re not already doing so, I highly encourage incorporating independent reading into your routine. If possible, read alongside your students as well. It truly makes a difference in building a strong reading culture in the classroom! #teachersoftiktok #newteacher #firstyearteacher #englishteacher #middleschoolteacher #reading #encouragingreading #elateachersoftiktok
When you have a chance, please check out Thirteen Brother Pirates. I wrote it for middle grade boys to pull them away from gaming consoles, but my daughters have loved the books too. Would be happy to send you a set.

We also do 10 mins of SSR at the beginning of every class period (except Wednesdays for early release) and then they can return to their book as an early finisher! And we do informal book talks when they finish a book so I can help them find their next book! It’s made such a big difference in all of my students!

10 minutes every day plus a reading response after for accountability and applying skills we’ve learned to their book. we also have an intervention period at the end of the day where they read for 15 minutes at the beginning!

Love SSR! I used it in my high school English class this past year intentionally (and unintentionally as a time filler sometimes) for at least half an hour a week (4 day school week). I saw sooooo much success. We did it first semester only. My students’ first semester “final” was a choice board project of their book. The results were amazing 🤩 I had one student read over sixty comic books and lots who said they never read a book they liked until SSR. Definitely got some of my kids to be readers! 😁

This year I’m going to try doing the Hungry Teacher method! Mini lesson, mentor text and then independent books for practice. We will see how it goes! 🤷🏻♀️

When I was in high school, every Friday the entire ELA department had us do independent reading on Fridays for the entire class period (I think it was called like Free Reading Friday?”

Tuesdays and Thursdays for 15 minutes. My classes are 72 minutes. I try my best to also read during this time to model my own reading goals, too!

I teach 10th grade English! For all of first semester, we do 10 minutes of independent reading at the beginning of every day in place of traditional bell work.

I replaced Bell Work last year in quarter 4 with silent reading and it made such a difference. 🥲 I was shocked how many kids became little readers. So this year I want to do it again, but all year long! 🙌🏼
