@communityteacher: Internet diaspora wars are tired. Ghana’s independence leader was an HBCU grad. For Kwame Nkrumah, Pan-Africanism wasn’t just a philosophy, it was his life. Born in the small village of Nkroful, Ghana in 1909, Nkrumah was a gifted student who studied abroad. Influenced early by Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. Du Bois, and inspired by Nigerian nationalist Nnamdi Azikiwe, he chose Lincoln University, an HBCU in Pennsylvania, for his higher education. In both the U.S. and the U.K., Nkrumah became a key organizer among people of African descent. When he returned home, he led the charge for independence — eventually jailed for his activism, then rising to become Ghana’s first Prime Minister and President. A bold voice for unity, Nkrumah was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity, and stood firmly against colonialism and neocolonialism across the continent. After a 1966 coup, he lived in exile until his death in 1972. Today, Ghana honors him with statues, currency, and a national holiday. His legacy still echoes in Black consciousness around the world. What’s your image of Nkrumah? What does his vision mean to you ? as a Ghanaian or a member of the African diaspora? #africanhistory #blackhistory #thecommunityteacher #osagyefo #essencefest
