I think MLB is set up for better festivities due to how the game is played. Hitters aren’t concerned about injury and pitchers aren’t either due to only pitching one inning. The roster size as you mentioned plays a big role in that too. In basketball, the risk of injury is higher the more you exert energy. Your 1v1 idea or even a 3v3 would be better.

I don’t watch the nba a lot and not sure it’s been done before but a 3v3 tournament with the conferences would be a cool idea. Each conference will have 8 representatives and can draft 2 players to their team. Each game is single elimination and in the final would be a team to represent each conference
