Imagine doing this once in history, just once and going down in history forever! Everyone remembers the Ford vs Ferrari war, Porsche's subsequent dominance of this race for several years, and Audi's sweeping diesel cars. Despite all that money, effort, and racing war between the big boys, Mazda and the rotary engine achieved the impossible and entered the history of the Le Mans race forever ❤️

“Too efficient and lightweight giving an unfair advantage” and yet, her we are 30 years on, trying to gain the most efficiency possible every day! Just goes to show that the FIA does what suits them and not the sport! Ban something so superior, and clearly better, instead of making other teams find a way!

When they bend the rules so much that you can no longer participate, then you have eternal fame.

Aaaaaand lies. The ban of rotary engines was decided far before the race even happened. Mazda just begged for the fia to postpone the ban by one year so they could have one more chance. The rules for next year standardized 3.5 liter naturally aspirated piston engines, which naturally ended up banning the rotaries.

1970: Mazda makes its Le Mans debut with a rotary engine (Mazda 10A in a Chevron B16).
1983–1991: Mazda competes more seriously with prototypes like the 717C, 757, 767, and 787.

The FIA and ACO had already set rule changes in motion for the 1992 Le Mans season before Mazda’s win in 1991. The updated regulations standardized engines to 3.5 liter naturally aspirated reciprocating units, following F1s lead. Rotary engines weren’t explicitly banned, but the new rules excluded them by default, meaning it was a technical cutoff, not a targeted ban.

imagine if they didn't restrict it. many more teams would probably also switch to rotary, optimizing and perfecting it, and we could have had a good rotary engine today, that productioncars could have had
