Every bad storm we give meds as applicable AND they get snuggled and loved. I’m not going to leave E or my BC niece shivering and shaking in fear be cause “but you coddle them”

I think the key is comforting *calmly*. I see a lot of people (especially when i worked in grooming) who only make their dogs fear worse by "comforting" them in a very hyper way and it only ever amped the dogs fear up until they were inconsolable. think "oh my god oh fido! oh my baby is so scared!" and aggressively hugging and kissing their dog, versus what I do with my lil wimp, which is calmly having him sit with me, petting, and talking softly about how he's super cool and totally brave. I also found making scary things a game helped. maybe my dog is just easily tricked, but acting like he's superman for stepping closer to the scary thing and coming back to me really helps him. kind of like when a kid falls, if you start fussing they'll cry, if you laugh about it they think its funny (unless they're really hurt). they have their own emotions but they also look to us for guidance on how to feel about things.

Pike also hungers for flying insects and I’ve been trying to shoo him away from the spicy ones.

Mine gets scared of things pretty easily and then all she wants is to crawl onto my lap and be held while she figures out the situation. And cause my job is to make her feel safe, I let her do just that. I’d much rather her feeling protected with me than cowering under a table or something like that.

oh you shouldn't give your dog comfort when they're afraid or nervous ?? not me. my dog knows if she pathetically pretends to scratch her ear I'll baby talk her and scratch it for her. she comes to me to be sick bc she knows she'll be comforted. miss me with not caring about my dogs feelings like that's MY DAUGHTER WDYM

She needs to sit with her discomfort even if she wants to escape and is clearly uncomfortable (every weird balanced/compulsion trainer take)
