Greg Abbott just compared the Central Texas flood tragedy to a football game. When asked who’s to blame, he said: “That’s the word choice of the losers… Championship teams say, don’t worry about it, we’ll score again.” Excuse me? This was not a game. Children died. Families are still searching for their daughters. People lost everything—some lost their entire families. And our governor is talking about touchdowns? If we follow the analogy—who are the “losers”? The families asking what went wrong? Kerrville? Hunt? Ingram? And who are the “champions”? The same officials who failed to warn residents in time? The leaders who turned down funding for flood preparedness? Are you receiving a championship trophy for the most catastrophic failure of all time? These communities are traumatized and heartbroken. We have questions that remain unanswered, and a failure of leadership at this level demands immediate accountability, not asinine sports metaphors.
