I know what you’re thinking, “duh.” But hold on- because that’s usually not the response I get from folks who work with me. It is taken a step further, probably from someone on the internet, telling you that FRUIT of all things is going to “cause diabetes” or make it worse, when the truth is this is incorrect. . We cannot keep throwing fruit in the same bucket as “sugar”- that’s way too simplistic and ultimately false. Here’s why: . The pancreas has two vital jobs to perform, without which the body could not live. 1. The secretion of major digestive enzymes. Sodium of bicarbonate is also released at this time to alkalize the stomach contents so these digestive enzymes can work. 2. (Most pertinent to diabetes) the production of insulin by the beta cells for glucose utilization. . It is important to note here that fructose from fruit moves through cell walls by diffusion, not active transport, as in the case of glucose. This means that the need for insulin to assist fructose into a cell is highly questionable, yet diabetics are commonly told not to eat fruit because of its sugar. . Fruits are high in antioxidants and astringents and will move your lymphatic system. This is why one sees a lymphatic response when fruit is consumed. That is what you want! Fruits, also being a simple sugar, are superior for blood sugar conditions, pancreatitis, hepatitis, and all other gastric and intestinal conditions. Fructose does not require insulin or extensive digestive enzymes. . There has been quite a bit of confusion in recent years when it comes to fruit. Mainly, this is due to the justifiably negative press aimed at high doses of high-fructose corn syrup (or HFCS) found in sodas, candies, and fruit juices. These foods are associated with higher risks of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and insulin resistance. But, consuming large amounts of whole fruits is known to lower the risk of all of these conditions. So what is going on here? I’m still looking for people who are overweight and diabetic from eating fruits… . Happy Saturday!
