When I started shooting video, I had no idea what I was doing. I had to completely learn a new format that was VERY different from photography. Everything I’ve learned about video is self-taught. Here’s the definitive list of how I stepped up my video game with my trusty iPhone 13 Pro Max. • Always shoot directly within the native camera app on your phone! • If you’re shooting on an iPhone, change your video format from “high efficiency” to “most compatible”. This changes the format your iPhone record video in so that tiktok and other apps don’t compress the sh*t out of it. • In your phone’s camera settings, turn off any gimmicky features. I shoot with iPhone, so that means turning off all HDR modes, Apple Pro Res, and Cinematic modes. • I am back to shooting 4k at 30fps. Switch to 1080p if you’re shooting on an older device the doesn’t have the option to change the file type. Switch to 60fps (or higher) if you plan to slow the video footage down. • Wipe your lenses off with a soft cloth or whatever shirt you’re wearing! (unless it’s sequins—definitely DO NOT wipe your lens down with that) • Always start filming BEFORE your subject/action starts and stay filming AFTER it’s done. • Move very, VERY slowly when filming. The faster your recording motion, the less amount of frames exist with your subject in it. • Take 1, 2, 3, or 23 clips! It’s always better to have extra footage to edit with than less. • Shoot what speaks to you! Don’t try to create something that isn’t authentic to you. Put what you want to see out into the world and you will find your audience. • I hope this helps you! I’ve been trying my best to stay on top of questions and answer whenever I can. If you’re still wondering about something, or want to add to this list, feel free to comment! • #ethanbarberco #reelstutorial #reelstips #tipsandtricks #newyorkphotographer
