@retailwithreece: Should pharmacists fill maintinence meds for doctors who are self-prescribing? #pharmacist #pharmacy #retailpharmacy #pharmacyschool #pharmacystudent #pharmacytechnician #pharmacytech #doctor #nursepractitioner #physicianassistant
We can technically do the Rx here in my state but it’s such an odd legal grey area. There’s technically no provider-patient-pharmacist triad (unless this is a very obtuse triangle we’re talking about) so I’ve seen pharmacists deny them here too.

ur state doesn’t allow doctors to prescribe for themselves? ours does, for non-controls obviously. we actually have a MD who calls in his own stuff at my pharmacy. I’d like to think we must be fast & efficient if they’re choosing our local chain over anywhere else 🤷🏻♀️

Over the years I have had to deny many scripts. It is never easy. Patients do not believe how this can actually keep us up at night wondering if we did right or not. You HAVE to follow your instinct and training.

I’ve once denied a controlled rx from an MD trying to prescribed for his 30 yo son. He then told me I’m the reason mental health is bad in this world even after I told it’s not morally right. I’m the bad the guy tho. Whatever.

Oh wait if a doctor did a verbal order for themselves for a sickness like an antibiotic, would that be okay? My doc brother was very sick and wanted to self prescribe but was afraid and paid a high copay to go to an NP

I would have filled it if it wasn't a strange dose or increase. It's a legit prescription in my state. I get it tho, I've dealt with other pharmacists agreeing to do stuff that I didn't. Always a patient or doctor saying "one of the other pharmacists did it last time". Well we each have our own license and training. I worked for the government, so even worse since they allow pharmacists with any state license/laws practice in any other state at a government facility.

I usually let prescribers write for themselves unless it's controlled or something

We're allowed to fill meds for prescribers but it's limited - antibiotics, diabetes meds, that sort of thing. No controls, no psych meds. It gets rough sometimes.

I’ve had quite a few pharmacists deny doctors the ability to prescribe themselves things that can not be proven through physical tests such as blood pressure checks, blood tests, etc. May not be a control but can be easily abused. I had a patient threaten the pharmacy because we gave them 90 days of an antidepressant the way the doctor prescribed and they threatened to overdose them self on it because they can’t have that much in their possession at one time.

It depends on what it is. If Dr knows they have a strep throat why should he go to another Dr to get a z pack. As long it’s not medications that can be abused, I don’t see an issue with it.

they can't self prescribe controls in Illinois. should be everything in my opinion but if it's legal not my place to deny it.

When Covid vaccines first started we had to make a waiting list cause once it defrosted we had to use it… a Dr came up to consult asking to get it and when I told him unfortunately there’s a waiting list “well I’m a Dr and you have no one here” he in fact did not get it per my pharmacist.

People saying drs can self prescribe.... How far do you think that goes? Cause I had a dentist self prescribing their psych meds, and ivermectin for Covid prevention.... and got mad when we told them

US regulations and policies have become so black and white, even compared to highly regulated countries. The lack of professional judgement allowed saddens me. Or maybe I just miss simpler times.

I’ve never had a doc write his own psych meds, only ever abx. Which doesn’t bother me. A psych med is wild though, especially a dose increase…like what
